Harris County Sheriff's Office Junior Mounted Posse
Saturday, 01 December 2007

The HARRIS COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE - JUNIOR MOUNTED POSSE is a non-profit educational and sports organization for youth age 6 to 18.  The Posse is a precision equine drill team which serves the Harris County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) as representatives and goodwill ambassadors to the citizens of Harris County, Texas and surrounding areas.

Founded in 1951, the Posse continues it's proud and longstanding tradition of developing the leaders of tomorrow.  Through diligent drill practice, education and close association with law enforcement officials and many other concerned adults, the Junior Deputies learn reverence for God and Country, citizenship, responsibility, leadership, teamwork and sportsmanship.

The Junior Deputies ride full-size horses in completion of their duties. The Posse performs at parades, rodeos and other public events. In addition, the Posse represents Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garica at community events and through public service.

The Posse also completes a number of Pony Express relay rides which take them through numerous surrounding counties.  Every winter, often times through cold and rain, the Junior Deputies ride their horses to deliver the Mayor of Houston's proclamation of the upcoming Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo to other South East Texas Mayors.  In a ceremony on courthouse steps of surrounding County Seats, the Mayor, Sheriff, and County Judge accept the proclamation, personally meet with the children of the Posse, and are always impressed by the showmanship, organization, and maturity of Harris County's young representatives.

The Posse is also involved in the support of the Special Olympics, the MS 150 Ride, the D.A.R.E. Drug Abuse Resistance Education program, supporting the HCSO Deputies deployed in Iraq and Afganistan, and other worthy causes.  On the average, the Posse attends one to two community events (rodeos, parades, service opportunities) a month.  When they are not performing or serving their community, they are diligently practicing their high-speed equine drills two to four weekends a month.
